After in-depth research and demonstration, State Grid Corporation of China has decided to initiate ± 1100 kV high-voltage direct current operation. On January 26th, the company held a mobilization meeting in Beijing to comprehensively deploy and mobilize efforts to promote the ± 1100 kV high-voltage direct current work.
The meeting proposed to strive to complete the research on key technologies within one and a half years and determine the main technical solutions for the project; Breakthrough key equipment technology issues and complete the development of model prototypes within 2 years; Build a ± 1100 kV high-voltage direct current demonstration project within 5 years.

As China's energy strategy moves westward, the country will further strengthen the development of energy resources in Xinjiang, Xizang and other western regions. These large energy bases are located over 2400 kilometers away from the load centers in the central and eastern regions, and there is an urgent need to develop and apply higher voltage level ultra-high voltage direct current transmission technology.
State Grid Corporation of China launched a comprehensive research on key technologies for ± 1000 kV and above ultra-high voltage direct current transmission in 2009. In 2010, the company organized relevant research and design units and equipment manufacturers to conduct in-depth research and demonstration on ± 1000 kV and above ultra-high voltage direct current transmission technology, completed conceptual design, and proposed recommended voltage level schemes. On December 17th, the company's party group held a special meeting to study and determine the use of a voltage level of ± 1100 kV.
Shu Yinbiao emphasized that all relevant units should fully recognize that the development of ± 1100 kV high-voltage direct current transmission technology has a good technical foundation, talent foundation, and spiritual foundation; We should fully understand the difficulties faced in developing ± 1100 kV high-voltage direct current transmission technology, and focus on key technology research and key equipment development. He said that all units should scientifically and effectively promote the work related to ± 1100 kV high-voltage direct current, establish specialized organizational structures as soon as possible according to the requirements of the meeting, implement responsibilities, ensure resource investment, and make every effort to carry out the work.
